Maximizing your closet space

Good closet design doesn’t just appear.

As a designer for Closet Factory, Ileana Fajardo’s Number One goal is to be sure she takes a careful look at a client’s current situation and future needs. She calls it a puzzle with pieces that have to fit together to ensure function, beauty and potential.

“We look at what they have and what they need,” says Ileana. “We make sure we can accommodate it all: Short hanging items, long hanging items – or some like to just fold their clothing, so we’ll come and just design around that.” Other times, the challenge is that a closet is too small, with a client needing to store many items in a space that just isn’t up to the task.

But why is there such a need for closet solutions?

Space squeeze

Many of today’s houses don’t have enough storage because more are multi-generational homes, said Ileana. More members of families live together. Bedroom closets tend to absorb stuff that should be stored in other parts of the house – things like luggage, memorabilia, trophies and linens. There just isn’t room for these things to go anywhere else.

In the quest to create storage solutions, a local spot to see products and accessories sure does help.

Whether Closet Factory is creating new bedroom closets, garage areas, laundry rooms or pantry layouts, their Maitland showroom helps clients visualize choices on finishes, design concepts and more.

Becky Dorman of Casselberry said the showroom was a great assist as she added closets in her new home. Her bedroom closet has an island with drawers and a swivel-out ironing board, the iron also storing neatly within. “With the design center, you can walk around, look at everything and see if it would work for you,” she said.

With Ileana’s help, Becky decided on a pull-out jewelry cabinet, pull-out laundry baskets, swivel-out mirrors and retractable wardrobe arm within the four closets they installed for her family. She has lighted glass shelves and slanted shelves to showcase her purses and shoes. Meanwhile, her husband’s closet has a stack of drawers with a mirror and lighting. A pull-out pant rack gives him ease of access.

Becky said that working with Ileana – who previously had 30 years in the office furniture and design industry – has been a pleasure.

“She is Johnny on the Spot,” said Becky. “She’s there on time and does what she says she’s going to do. From the measurements on down, there’s never been any delay.”

Ileana, meanwhile, gives credit to Closet Factory’s professional installers – many with the company for six years or more – who garner great client feedback and bring her designs to life.
